Johnson and Johnson, a billion-dollar firm stated on Wednesday that it is recalling five of its aerosol sunscreen products after small levels of benzene, a toxin, were discovered in some samples. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, long-term exposure to high amounts of benzene can lead to leukemia or other cancers. 294 batches of sunscreen were tested by a pharmaceutical company, Valisure 27% of the batches contained this toxin.

Benzene is a component of gasoline and a common rubber and wax solvent, is extremely dangerous and widely used across the world. The effects of the toxin differ depending on whether it is inhaled, eaten, or meets a person’s skin. Symptoms range from dizziness to irregular pulse, but excessive amounts of exposure might even result in death. This isn’t the first bad rep Johnson and Johnson. This is yet another setback for Johnson & Johnson, which has been hit by legal losses and damages claims in recent years because of problems with products including narcotic medications, baby powder, and vaccines.

• Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen
• Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen
• Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense aerosol sunscreen
• Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol sunscreen
• Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen.
