Covid-19 cases among US children and teens jumped 84% in a week, pediatrician group says.

Children have been the last one to get vaccinated along with the fact that if you’re under 12 years old you’re not even able to get vaccinated yet. Given that we’re all vaccinated today, what that means is that unvaccinated individuals are being sick in larger numbers because the Delta form of the virus is more contagious. After a few months of declines in reported cases, the numbers began to rise again in July when the highly transmissible Delta form of the virus took hold across the country. 

This can be concerning since kids see each other everyday due to school. Since the outbreak began, more than 4.2 million children have tested positive for Covid-19. In the most recent weekly data, children and teenagers accounted for 19 percent of reported cases. The news comes as schools have recently begun or will shortly begin, with some requiring no masks or social distance, and while cases and hospitalizations in many regions of the country are at record highs.

Children are not the same as grownups. They are not given the option of being vaccinated. Those decisions are the responsibility of the parents. There is a significant distinction between adults making decisions for children and adults making decisions that may help to prevent illnesses seen in children. To keep children safe it is important to keep their masks on and keep them socially distanced especially at school.
